TSAF Hosts Asia’s Largest Youth Climbing Event at JRD Tata Sports Complex

JAMSHEDPUR – The Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) launched the IFSC Asian Youth Sport Climbing Championship 2024 at Jamshedpur’s JRD Tata Sports Complex, welcoming 185 climbers from across 13 countries for the four-day event.

With disciplines in Lead, Speed, and Boulder, the championship brings together elite youth climbers aged 14 to 19, aiming to prepare them for global competitions, including the Youth World Championships and the Olympics. This is the first time such a large-scale youth climbing event is being hosted in eastern India, underscoring Jamshedpur’s growing presence in international sport climbing.

The event was inaugurated by Chanakya Chaudhary, Chairman of TSAF, with notable dignitaries including Col. Vijay Singh, President of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, and Rasip Inn, Secretary General of IFSC Asia. Highlighting the significance, Chaudhary remarked, "Hosting this championship in Jamshedpur reaffirms our commitment to nurturing young athletes and elevating India’s standing in global sport climbing."

Event Schedule Highlights (Day 1)

  • 07:00 AM: U16 Boulder Isolation Open

  • 09:00 AM: U16 Boulder Qualification, U18 Male Lead Qualification

  • 11:30 AM: U20 Male Lead Qualification

  • 04:00 PM: U16 Boulder Final and Awarding Ceremony

  • 06:30 PM: U20 Female Lead Qualification

The championship categories are organized by age: Youth B (U16), Youth A (U18), and Junior (U20), providing a competitive platform for each group. TSAF’s role as host reflects its dedication to athlete development and environmental awareness, inspired by founder Bachendri Pal’s vision of promoting adventure in India.

India’s contingent includes 30 athletes, with 13 coming from TSAF’s ecosystem, including participants from the MKP centers in Pipla, Bagunhatu, Parsudih, Tinplate, and Rajnagar. These grassroots athletes have trained rigorously at the TSAF Sport Climbing Academy, a facility equipped with advanced climbing infrastructure supported by Tata Steel Foundation and JCAPCPL.
