Jharkhand’s Ongoing Struggle with Terrorist Activities Under Focus
Recent Al Qaeda arrests add to state’s history of terror connections
Jharkhand’s recurring involvement in terrorist activities underscored by recent NIA arrests of Al Qaeda suspects.
RANCHI – The state’s extensive history of terrorist connections is further bolstered by the apprehension of eight suspected Al Qaeda operatives in Jharkhand by the National Investigative Agency on Thursday.
Since its establishment, Jharkhand has served as a focal point for terrorist activities.
The state has provided a secure environment for organizations such as the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and the Indian Mujahideen (IM).
Over the past two decades, Jharkhand has been the site of investigations by numerous police teams from a variety of states.
SIMI and IM activities have been identified as being centered in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Dhanbad.
Links to terrorist organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba have also been observed in smaller communities and remote regions of Jharkhand.
In 2002, the state’s susceptibility to becoming a terrorist breeding ground was initially revealed.
In that year, two Pakistani terrorists who were implicated in the attack on the Kolkata American Centre were killed in Hazaribagh.
The apprehension of a Kashmiri militant in Hazaribagh in 2013 averted a significant terrorist attack in Delhi.
In 2011, Danish Riyaz, a software engineer and purported SIMI commander from Ranchi, was apprehended for his alleged involvement in the 2008 Ahmedabad blasts.
Another adolescent from Ranchi, Faizrul Rahman, was apprehended on suspicion of being a Pakistani intelligence agent.
An arrest in the Jamtara district in 2007 revealed connections to the Ajmer bomb explosion through mobile SIM cards.
The 2011 apprehension of SIMI member Abu Faizal revealed Jamshedpur as a breeding ground for terrorist groups.
In 2019, the Jharkhand ATS apprehended Md Kallimuddin Muzhiri near Tatanagar railway station on the basis of NIA inputs.
These incidents underscore the persistent obstacles that Jharkhand faces in its efforts to combat terrorist activities within its borders.
