Speeding vehicle hits elderly man on Kalimati Road; driver apprehended
A 52-year-old security guard lost his life after being struck by a speeding auto rickshaw while crossing Kalimati Road in Golmuri.
JAMSHEDPUR – An elderly man was fatally injured by a speeding auto rickshaw on Kalimati Road near Howrah Bridge in Golmuri late Monday night.
The victim, identified as Chandan Singh, a 52-year-old private security guard from Sakchi Gurudwara Bustee, was crossing the one-way road while returning home from work.
The high-speed auto rickshaw, traveling from Sakchi towards Golmuri, collided with Singh, causing him to fall and suffer a severe head injury.
Bystanders quickly responded to the incident, with some rushing to assist Singh while others pursued the fleeing auto rickshaw.
The vehicle was intercepted near the RD Tata roundabout by the pursuing group.
A patrolling police unit arrived at the scene and took the driver into custody.
Despite being rushed to MGM Medical College Hospital, Singh was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Golmuri thana Officer-in-Charge confirmed the driver’s arrest and vehicle seizure, stating that the accused would face judicial custody following an alcohol influence test.
This tragic event underscores the persistent problem of reckless auto rickshaw driving in the city.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of regulating unruly auto rickshaws, which pose a significant threat to both pedestrians and passengers, despite regular traffic police efforts.
