JNAC Ordered to Provide Comprehensive Report Within Two Weeks
Jharkhand High Court reprimands JNAC for slow progress on building infractions, demands detailed report. Only 39% of high-rises compliant. Court seeks comprehensive data on violations.
JAMSHEDPUR – The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee has been criticized by the Jharkhand High Court for its insufficient response to the pervasive building code infractions in the city.
The court scrutinized JNAC’s efforts to resolve map deviations and basement encroachments during a recent hearing.
According to JNAC’s submission, only 42 of the 107 high-rise buildings have had their basements cleansed of illegal occupants.
The petitioner’s legal representative contested the validity of JNAC’s affidavit, asserting that it was inconsistent with previously filed documents.
The JNAC’s progress was met with dissatisfaction by Justices R. Mukhopadhyay and P.K. Srivastava, who called for a comprehensive report within the next two weeks.
"We require detailed information on approved multi-story structures, map deviations, rainwater harvesting systems, and actions taken against violators," said Mukhopadhyay.
A court-appointed committee of advocates had previously identified substantial violations of building regulations in the JNAC region.
By 2023, the ongoing Public Interest Litigation has revealed the construction of 1,246 illicit buildings, with 57 still in the process of being developed.
"The petitioner’s lawyer argued during the hearing that the JNAC’s inaction over the past decade is inexcusable." "We urge the court to take decisive action to curb these rampant violations."
