BJP stalwart Santosh Gangwar appointed Jharkhand Governor

Political veteran among nine new gubernatorial appointments

Former Union minister and BJP leader Santosh Gangwar takes on new role as Jharkhand Governor, part of a major reshuffle across nine states announced by President Murmu.

RANCHI – President Droupadi Murmu has named former Union minister Santosh Gangwar as Jharkhand’s new Governor in a late-night reshuffle.

President Droupadi Murmu’s announcement late Saturday night revealed a significant reshuffling of gubernatorial positions across nine states.

Veteran BJP leader Santosh Gangwar, an eight-time MP from Bareilly, has been appointed as the new Governor of Jharkhand, marking a new chapter in his political career.

Political journey spanning decades

Gangwar’s political odyssey began in 1984 when he first contested the Lok Sabha elections. Despite an initial setback, he secured his first parliamentary victory in 1989.

From then on, Gangwar won consecutive elections in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2004, establishing himself as a formidable political figure in Uttar Pradesh.

"Gangwar’s appointment is a recognition of his years of service to the party and the nation," said a local BJP leader. "His experience will be invaluable in his new role as Governor."

Electoral setbacks and comebacks

The veteran politician faced a temporary setback in 2009 when he lost to Congress candidate Praveen Singh Aran. However, Gangwar bounced back, securing victories in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, further cementing his political stature.

Recent developments and party loyalty

Gangwar’s exclusion from the BJP’s candidate list for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections raised eyebrows. Party sources cited the unofficial age limit of 75 years as the reason.

Despite this, Gangwar remained loyal to the party, actively campaigning for his replacement candidate.

"Even when his ticket was cut, Gangwar showed unwavering commitment to the BJP," noted political analyst Dr. Suman Verma. "This appointment seems to be a reward for his loyalty and experience."

Broader implications of the reshuffle

The gubernatorial reshuffle saw appointments in several key states. Notable among them are C P Radhakrishnan moving from Jharkhand to Maharashtra, Ramesh Bais being transferred from Maharashtra to Bihar, and Gulab Chand Kataria shifting from Assam to Punjab.

Looking ahead

As Gangwar prepares to take charge at the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi, political observers are keen to see how his vast experience will shape his role in Jharkhand’s governance. His appointment is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to strengthen its presence in the state.

The date for Gangwar’s swearing-in ceremony is yet to be announced, but preparations are already underway in Ranchi to welcome the new Governor.
