Demolition Threat Looms Over 150 Homes in Jamshedpur

MLA Saryu Roy Vows to Fight for Residents’ Rights

Residents of several settlements in Jamshedpur face potential eviction as authorities issue demolition notices, citing environmental concerns.

JAMSHEDPUR – There is a demolition threat looming over around 150 houses in different areas adjoining Bhuiyandih in Jamshedpur. Notices have been issued to 150 house owners by the Jamshedpur Circle Officer’s Office.

However, Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy has taken up cudgels on behalf of the affected homeowners and has vowed to ensure that no house is demolished.

Approximately 150 households in the Bhuiyandih area of Jamshedpur, including Kalyan Nagar, Indira Nagar, and Chhaya Nagar, have received demolition notices under the Jharkhand Public Land Encroachment Act (JPLE).

The Circle Office of Jamshedpur issued the notices on July 6, giving residents 14 days to explain why their homes should not be demolished.

MLA Saryu Roy’s Intervention

Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy visited the affected areas, assuring residents of his support. He stated, “We will not let these homes be demolished and will raise this matter with the appropriate government authorities.”

Key Points of the Situation:

1. The affected areas are part of the 86 settlements excluded from the Tata lease agreement in 2005.

2. Some houses are built on government land.

3. A 2017 government decision to lease only 10 decimals of residential area has hindered residents from obtaining ownership rights.

4. The demolition notices stem from a recent joint survey conducted by various departments following National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders.

MLA Roy’s Concerns and Demands:

1. Lack of scientific approach in the issued notices

2. Need for a state-level meeting to discuss the discrepancies in the notices and the practicality of NGT orders

3. Importance of presenting a complete picture of Jamshedpur’s ground reality to the NGT

4. Question of why residents were not stopped or informed when these settlements were being established

Infrastructure Development in Affected Areas:

MLA Roy emphasized, “It’s crucial to strike a balance between river conservation and riverside settlements. Demolishing only the homes of the poor and socio-economically weak is not justifiable.”

He plans to raise this issue in the upcoming assembly session, urging the government to present all facts to the NGT and seek amendments to protect the vulnerable residents from displacement.
