Electoral Roll Update Kicks Off in Jharkhand, 3 Other States

Preparation Begins for Assembly Elections in Four States

Election Commission launches electoral roll revision process, setting July 1, 2024, as qualifying date for upcoming assembly elections in four key regions.

RANCHI – Election Commission has kicked off the electoral roll update in Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Jammu & Kashmir, signaling the start of preparations for forthcoming state assembly polls.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has set the wheels in motion for the upcoming state assembly elections, commencing the process of updating voter lists in three states and one union territory.

This initiative follows the successful conclusion of the 18th Lok Sabha elections and marks the beginning of preparations for the next round of democratic exercises in the country.

Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will undergo electoral roll revisions, with July 1, 2024, established as the qualifying date. This decision comes as the terms of the current legislative assemblies in these regions approach their conclusion.

Assembly Term Timelines

The existing legislative assemblies are set to complete their terms on the following dates:

– Haryana: November 3, 2024

– Maharashtra: November 26, 2024

– Jharkhand: January 5, 2025

Elections to these assemblies must be conducted before these dates to ensure a smooth transition of power.

Focus on Jammu and Kashmir

In a significant development, the ECI has also directed the updation of electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir. This decision follows the region’s impressive turnout in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

"The story of huge participation in Lok Sabha elections by people of J&K is very hopeful and inspiring, showing how eager people are to participate in democracy," remarked Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar during a recent press conference.

Pre-revision Activities

To ensure the accuracy and inclusivity of the electoral rolls, the Commission has outlined several pre-revision activities:

1. House-to-house surveys by Booth Level Officers

2. Rationalization of polling stations

3. Enhancement of voter image quality in the rolls

These activities are scheduled to take place from June 25 to July 24, 2024.

Revision Schedule

The Special Summary Revision (SSR) of Electoral Rolls will adhere to the following timeline:

– Draft electoral roll publication: July 25, 2024

– Claims and objections period: July 25 to August 9, 2024

– Final publication of electoral roll: August 20, 2024

An ECI official emphasized, "Pure, inclusive and updated electoral rolls are the cornerstone of free, fair and credible elections."

Public Participation Encouraged

The Election Commission has urged all eligible citizens in these states and the UT to actively engage in the electoral roll update process. This initiative aims to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to exercise their franchise in the upcoming elections.

As the electoral machinery gears up for these crucial state assembly polls, the focus remains on maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the voter lists, setting the stage for another chapter in India’s vibrant democratic journey.
