Food Safety Department Warns Against Toxic Street Food

Inspection Reveals Use of Harmful Synthetic Colors in Kharsawan

The Food Safety Department of Saraikela-Kharsawan urges caution with street food during summer as synthetic colors pose health risks.

ADITAYPUR – The Food Safety Department of Saraikela-Kharsawan has issued a warning to the public to exercise caution when consuming street food during the scorching summer heat.

Street food items like chaat, golgappas, chowmein, and samosas, often prepared well in advance and left uncovered, can quickly become toxic and lead to food poisoning.

Food Safety Officer Aditi Singh conducted inspections at several food establishments in the Kharsawan area, including Maharaja Hotel, Sahu Hotel, Sahu Chaat Shop, and various street carts and stalls.

During the inspection at Sahu Chaat Shop, synthetic color was found in the chola being prepared, which was immediately destroyed.

The department advises the public to avoid brightly colored and shiny food items, as these often contain synthetic colors or excessive amounts of color, posing serious health risks such as cancer.

The department reminds food traders that selling toxic food items can result in fines ranging from Rs 1 to 10 lakh and imprisonment from six months to life.
