Jamshedpur Authorities Crack Down on Unauthorized Use of Basement Parking in High-Rise Buildings

Local administration resumes demolition drive against buildings misusing basement areas for commercial purposes, targeting 21 identified violators.

The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) targets 21 buildings for violations related to basement parking misuse, issuing notices to owners and demanding compliance.

JAMSHEDPUR – Despite multiple warnings and court orders, a number of tall buildings in Jamshedpur, including neighborhoods like Ranikudar, Kadma, Sakchi, Baradwari, Sonari, and Bistupur, Jugsalai and even Adityapur, persist in disregarding regulations for basement parking and instead using the area for commercial purposes.

Due to this misuse, the local administration has decided to once again take action against unauthorized usage, just like they did two years ago.

The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has found 21 buildings that have not complied with the regulations regarding the designated basement space for parking.

The owners of these buildings have received notices, requesting them to stop their commercial activities and restore the spaces to their original purpose.

The court order has prompted the JNAC to take action, emphasizing the importance of following the norms outlined in the National Building Code.

According to these guidelines, the majority of the basement area, specifically 85 percent, should be designated for parking purposes. The remaining 15 percent can be utilized for private security guards and generator sets.

Several buildings have transformed their basement areas into bustling commercial hubs, which has further worsened the already challenging parking situation in the city. This has not only created safety risks but also added to the problem of traffic congestion.

The administration’s choice to resume the demolition drive highlights its dedication to upholding regulations and ensuring the appropriate use of infrastructure.

The goal is to prevent unauthorized commercialization of basement areas and encourage adherence to established norms in order to improve urban planning and development in Jamshedpur.

The administration’s initiative has been well-received by residents and stakeholders, who stress the significance of following regulations to uphold order and safety in the city’s urban landscape.

Their hope is that by implementing strict enforcement measures, it will discourage future violations and create a more organized and efficient urban environment that benefits all residents.

Officials stated that during the survey, they are recording videos of buildings that are in violation in order to help take appropriate legal action against those who are breaking the rules.

Rakesh Kumar, a resident of the city, had filed a PIL stating that the civic body was not taking the enforcement of the building code seriously, resulting in the presence of numerous buildings with unauthorized additional floors.

According to sources in the JNAC, the decision to use basements for commercial purposes instead of parking has resulted in the roads in front of these buildings being crowded with parked vehicles.

Enforcement action will be taken against buildings that utilize basements for restaurants, shops, or offices.
