Nepal’s Lamichhane Awaits Sentencing for Rape
Former Nepal cricket captain Sandeep Lamichhane convicted of sexual assault, sentencing pending.
DESK – Sandeep Lamichhane, previously leading Nepal’s cricket team, has been convicted of sexually assaulting a minor.
His last international cricket performance was against Kenya in a T20 match in August.
Lamichhane, known for swiftly reaching 50 wickets in both ODI and T20I matches, has had an impressive career.
Globally, he was in demand in top T20 leagues like Australia’s BBL, Pakistan’s PSL, and the CPL.
Post-arrest, his assets, including bank accounts and properties, were seized.
The district attorney has sought damages for the physical and emotional distress caused to the victim.
Lamichhane was detained on October 6 at Tribhuvan International Airport after playing in the Caribbean Premier League.
A formal complaint was lodged against him on September 6 at Gaushala’s Metropolitan Police Circle.
The Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office charged him with the August 21, 2022, offense.
He managed to secure release on a Rs 2 million bail bond after appealing to the Supreme Court.
Initially jailed on November 4, 2022, his arrest followed accusations of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old in a hotel in Kathmandu.
Lamichhane, notable as Nepal’s first IPL player with Delhi Capitals in 2018, is now awaiting his jail term to be decided.
