Jharkhand’s New Drive Against Female Foeticide

Hemant Soren Government Intensifies Efforts to Curb Female Foeticide

Jharkhand government offers up to Rs 1 lakh reward to combat female foeticide and abandonment of girl children, enhancing social and legal measures.

RANCHI, December 17 –

The Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government is reinforcing its fight against female foeticide with a significant reward initiative.

Up to Rs 1 lakh is being offered to informers, individuals, or organizations who provide crucial information in this regard.

This scheme, aimed at identifying foeticide or illegal sex determination clinics, was initially introduced three years ago, during the Covid period.

Despite its existence, the Health Department has yet to receive any complaints about female foeticide or illegal sex determination activities.

In a renewed effort to promote this scheme, the government plans to collaborate with the public relations department and other departments.

According to Health Department sources, anyone can report instances of female foeticide or illegal baby tests via the toll-free number 104.

Rewards are structured to provide Rs 40,000 each to the informer and pregnant woman, and Rs 20,000 to those aiding in the process.

The initiative comes in response to the concerning trend of newborns, particularly girls, being abandoned in deserted places or aborted after illegal sex determination.

Such newborns are typically entrusted to the District Child Protection Officer, with foster parents given a three-month window to claim them, failing which the government assumes full responsibility.

The government’s approach aims to address this issue both socially and legally, offering incentives for reporting and taking action against such practices.
