CWS-Bhumika Convenes Experts for Sustainable Food System in Jharkhand

The Center for World Solidarity (CWS) – Bhumika led a pivotal state-level food system dialogue in Jharkhand, focusing on sustainable farming practices.

JAMSHEDPUR – Hundreds of experts, including agricultural scientists, farmers, and representatives from government and non-government organizations, converged at the Center for Excellence for a significant discussion on organic and sustainable farming.

Manimoy Sinha, the Executive Director of CWS, inaugurated the event, emphasizing its importance in promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Shruti Pandey, organizer of the German Wealth Hunger Life project, introduced the food system discussion, setting the stage for in-depth dialogues.

Dr. Palash Bhushan Chatterjee, Joint Director at CWS, highlighted the critical role of indigenous crops and food producer associations in sustainable agriculture.

The dialogue featured a panel debate with prominent figures like Dr. Shambhu Nath Karmakar of Birsa Agricultural University, young farmer Amit Mahato, and Ms. Anima Lakra, District Horticulture Officer.

Discussions centered around catalyzing food system reform to ensure nutritionally rich, sustainable, and affordable food for all.

Dr. Karmakar pointed out the imbalance in agricultural production post-Green Revolution, emphasizing the need for sustainable methods to reduce heavy import dependency on edible oil and pulses.

The session was adeptly led by CWS Director Rajesh Kumar Jha, fostering insightful exchanges among the participants.

A second session, moderated by Sandeep Sahu, promoted agro-ecological approaches to end hunger, featuring speakers like Dr. Sachin Barbade, Shamshul Akhtar, Prem Chand Soren, Pranab Roy, and Anand Mahato.

The concluding panel, including ABM College Principal Dr. Vijay Kumar Piyush, District Agriculture Officer Mithilesh Kalindi, and others, discussed zero-budget natural gardening and the importance of freeing farmers from chemical fertilizers.

The event, moderated by Shweta Kumari, culminated with Ratna Das expressing gratitude to all contributors, acknowledging their role in shaping a sustainable and resilient food system in Jharkhand.
