Good News for Rail Staff: SER Central Hospital Introduces Balloon Kyphoplasty for Osteoporosis
Innovative Osteoporosis Treatment Debuts at Garden Reach’s SER Hospital
South Eastern Railway’s Central Hospital in Garden Reach has successfully performed its first balloon kyphoplasty, a breakthrough in treating osteoporosis-related vertebral fractures.
JAMSHEDPUR – The Department of Pain Medicine & Anaesthesiology at Central Hospital, South Eastern Railway, Garden Reach, marked a significant milestone by performing its first balloon kyphoplasty or vertebral augmentation.
This procedure was successfully conducted on a D11 vertebrae fracture, showcasing promising results.
Globally, osteoporosis impacts approximately 200 million individuals, with a high incidence of vertebral compression fractures (VCFs).
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, half of women and a quarter of men over 50 suffer osteoporosis-related fractures.
The risk of VCFs increases with age, especially in women over 80, leading to severe health complications without timely intervention.
Balloon Kyphoplasty offers an effective solution with high success rates and minimal complications.
The procedure involves creating a cavity in the vertebral body using an inflatable bone tamp and filling it with bone cement.
This technique not only rebuilds the fracture height but also reduces kyphosis, significantly alleviating pain and immobility in patients.
Its advantages include short surgery and recovery time, limited sedation, and typically no need for hospital stays.
The introduction of balloon kyphoplasty at Central Hospital represents a significant advancement in osteoporosis treatment, offering hope to many suffering from this debilitating condition.
