XLRI’s 31st JRD Tata Oration Highlights Importance of Business Ethics

The 31st JRD Tata Oration on Business Ethics at XLRI Jamshedpur features Arun Maira’s insights on transforming capitalism for societal good.

JAMSHEDPUR – XLRI Jamshedpur hosted its 31st JRD Tata Oration on Business Ethics on November 23, 2023, at the Tata Auditorium on its campus.

Mr. Arun Maira, a renowned consultant, author, and former Chairman of the Boston Consulting Group, India, delivered this year’s oration on "Transforming Capitalism To Make The World Better For Everyone."

The event was graced by Mr. TV Narendran, Chairman of XLRI, and Fr. S George S.J., Director of XLRI.

Fr. Kuruvilla Pandikattu, S.J., Chairperson of the JRD Tata Centre for Business Ethics, emphasized JRD Tata’s lifelong message of ethical responsibility in business decisions.

XLRI, through its JRD Tata Foundation for Business Ethics, has been a pioneer in integrating ethics into business education in India.

During the oration, Mr. Maira reflected on the role of large companies in nation-building and Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of economic freedom.

He highlighted JRD Tata’s decision-making approach, prioritizing national interest, a practice that proved beneficial for Tata in the long run.

Maira drew parallels between corporate ethics and the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, emphasizing societal responsibility over personal gain.

He concluded by advocating for a shift in corporate objectives, aligning them with societal and environmental improvement.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof. Sanjay Patro, Dean of Academics at XLRI.

The XLRI – JRD Tata Foundation in Business Ethics, established in 1991, continues to drive the conversation on business ethics in India, reflecting the institution’s commitment to fostering ethical business leaders.
