Violence Erupts Beyond Gaza: Hezbollah Fires into Northern Israel in Show of “Solidarity”
Escalating conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas results in over 500 deaths in a single day; Hezbollah joins fray launching strikes from Lebanon. Israeli retaliation hits 150 targets in Gaza, with Palestinian civilian toll rising.
DESK – In a spiraling crescendo of violence, Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian militants from Hamas on Sunday, marking the deadliest day of combat between the two sides in 50 years.
The Israeli civilian death toll has now reportedly crossed 300. The Hamas attack resulted in thousands of injuries. Around 100 Israeli soldiers and civilians, mostly women, have been reportedly taken hostage by the Hamas too.
The crisis escalated further when Hezbollah, the armed Lebanese group, fired rockets into northern Israel “in solidarity” with the Palestinian cause.
On the previous day, Palestinian militants launched a surprise multi-pronged attack into Israeli territory. According to the Israeli military, hundreds of these gunmen have now been killed, and dozens have been taken prisoner. The Israeli military also reported it is still dealing with militants in eight different locations within Israel.
Hezbollah Joins the Fight
Following the alarming escalation, Hezbollah announced it had launched attacks into northern Israel. In response, Israeli forces carried out artillery and drone strikes on Hezbollah positions near the border. No casualties were reported in these actions.
Retaliatory Strikes: A Grim Toll
Israeli warplanes have since retaliated with force, striking 150 targets in Gaza, including several compounds believed to house Hamas leaders. According to Palestinian security sources, the death toll includes 24 Palestinians, among them two women and four children, killed since midnight (21:00 GMT). The total number of Palestinian civilians killed has now exceeded 250.
Rising Civilian Casualties
Palestinian health officials have reported that among the 256 Palestinian civilians killed are 20 children, with nearly 1,800 people wounded. Hospitals in the area are crumbling under the strain, grappling with severe medical supply shortages.
Political Implications
The large-scale attack from Gaza undermines U.S-backed efforts to forge regional security alignments and could potentially threaten Palestinian aspirations for statehood, as well as Iran’s ambitions in the region.
“We will take mighty vengeance for this wicked day,” declared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His security cabinet has approved steps to destroy Hamas and Islamic Jihad’s military capabilities “for many years.”
in Gaza, the atmosphere remains charged. Gaza’s health ministry reported 232 people dead and at least 1,700 wounded. Israeli drones could be heard above the skies lit by black smoke, orange flashes, and sparks from explosions.
