First Somwar of Longest Sawan in Years, A Treat for Lord Shiva Devotees

This year sees the longest Sawan in 19 years, bringing additional days for the devotion of Lord Shiva and offering a special treat for Shiva followers.

JAMSHEDPUR – The Shiva Bhakts of Jamshedpur too are ready for the first Somwar of sacred Sawan month. For Hindus, the first Somwar (Monday) of Sawan month, which starts tomorrow, holds a special significance.

Interestingly, this year will witness the longest Sawan ever, lasting for 59 days.

Adhikamas, a phenomenon that occurs once every three years according to the Hindu calendar, is responsible for the lengthening of Chaturmas to 5 months from 4.

The Confluence of Adhikamas and Sawan

The confluence of Adhikamas and Sawan is taking place for the first time in 19 years, the last occurrence being in 2004.

This phenomenon happens to coincide with the Shiva worshipping and honouring month of Sawan, which starts on July 4.

Adhikamas, running from July 18 to August 16, coincides with Sawan, adding to its length. Consequently, Sawan will last until August 31, giving Shivaites eight consecutive Mondays to dedicate to Mahadev.

Preparations and Expectations for Sawan

On the first Monday of Shrawan, which marks the beginning of the holy month, millions of Shiv Bhakts (devotees of Lord Shiva) are expected to throng temples across the nation. Temples are busy preparing for the surge of devotees. They are meticulously adorned with elaborate decorations like vivid flowers, lights, and traditional themes. Special stands outside temples are set up to sell flowers, prasadam (blessed food), and other devotional items to visitors. For crowd management and maintaining tranquility, extra personnel have been deployed.

Significance of Sawan for Devotees

In Hindu mythology, the month of Shrawan, also called the Month of Lord Shiva, plays a significant role.

Devotees fast and pray to Lord Shiva throughout this month, which they believe brings good fortune and fulfills their aspirations.

This time around, with Sawan spanning two full months, devotees have more days for prayer and rituals, adding to the spiritual fervor.
