Legal Fraternity Up in Arms Against Advocate’s Arrest in Ghatshila, Judicial Work Impacted

Lawyers across Ghatshila protest against the imprisonment of advocate Tapan Kumar Chatterjee, disrupt court proceedings, demand justice.

JAMSHEDPUR – Advocates of Ghatshila are up in arms against the police action on a fellow advocate Tapan Kumar Chatterjee.

They boycotted judicial work and sought action.

The issue has ballooned into a confrontation with the police now.

A dispute has erupted in the Ghatshila subdivision of Jamshedpur as advocate Tapan Kumar Chatterjee was arrested on the charge of obstructing government work.

Following the incident, lawyers from the Ghatshila court have launched a strike, vowing to cease their participation in court proceedings until Chatterjee is released and action is taken against the responsible police officer.

The legal community in Ghatshila extended their protest to Jamshedpur on Saturday, where they sought the solidarity of their counterparts, including those from the Lawyers Defense and Jamshedpur Bar Association.

The advocates of Jamshedpur court pledged their support in response to the call.

Chatterjee was reportedly assaulted by officers from the Musabani police station on May 22.

The advocates said that his subsequent arrest led to physical and mental harm, prompting Ghatshila Bar Association’s general secretary Rama Prasad Mukherjee to file a bail petition, which was subsequently dismissed.

The secretary of the Ghatshila Bar Association stated that the lawyers will not engage in any judicial work until justice is served.

Moreover, the secretary, in association with other advocates, met the president of Lawyers Defense, Paramjeet Kumar Srivastava, to garner wider support.

The collective voice from Lawyers Defense echoed the pledge to support the Ghatshila lawyers in their protest.

The secretary has also informed the Governor about the unfolding incidents through e-mail and correspondence, heightening the urgency and gravity of the situation.
