JAMSHEDPUR – An unidentified teenage boy, estimated to be around 16 years of age, was recovered from the Kharkai river near Baroda Ghat in the Bagbera police station area on Saturday morning and later died, sending shock waves through the locality.
The discovery was made early in the morning. A group of locals had gone to the Kharkai riverbank for their daily bath. Meanwhile, they spotted the teenager floating in the water.
The bystanders promptly pulled the boy out. According to local residents, the youth was still breathing when he was brought to the river bank.
Efforts were made to revive him. However, he died shortly afterwards.
Bagbera Police rushed to the scene after receiving information. Officers took charge of the body and dispatched it for postmortem.
The teenager’s identity could not be established during the initial investigation. Moreover, no identifying documents were found on him.
Police are currently questioning residents in the surrounding areas. In addition, they are attempting to trace the boy’s place of origin and determine how he ended up in the river.
As part of the investigation, officers are also cross-referencing the case with missing persons complaints registered at nearby police stations. Such unidentified youth deaths in rivers have been reported in the region earlier as well.
A large crowd gathered at the spot after news spread. The incident caused considerable panic in the locality.
