High Court Approves Bail for Abhay Singh, in Jail for 5 Months on Extortion Charges
Jharkhand High Court grants bail to BJP leader Abhay Singh in the Builder Sagir extortion case. He was earlier arrested in Shastri Nagar violence case as well.
JAMSHEDPUR – BJP leader Abhay Singh has been granted bail by the High Court in the Builder Sagir extortion case, ending his 5-month stint in jail.
The decision came after a hearing held in the court of Anup Chaudhary of Jharkhand High Court.
Singh was initially arrested in connection with the Shastri Nagar violence case, and he also had pending charges against him in the Builder Sagir extortion case.
Abhay Singh’s brother, Nirbhay Singh, was recently granted anticipatory bail in the same extortion case.
The case was filed by Mango resident Mohammad Sagir, who accused Abhay Singh and his brother Dilip Singh of demanding extortion money.
According to the FIR, Sagir had acquired land from late Jeet Narayan Singh in 2012 to build a flat. During the construction, Abhay Singh and his brothers allegedly demanded ₹5 lakh in extortion money.
Moreover, according to the charges leveled, an additional ₹2 lakh was allegedly demanded for each flat under construction, with threats of violent consequences.
The lower court had earlier rejected the bail pleas, prompting the defendants to move to the High Court.
Abhay Singh has been in jail since April 10.
