MLA Saryu Roy Chairs Crucial Meeting to Save Jamshedpur’s Rivers Swarnarekha and Kharkai

Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy leads discussions on preserving Jamshedpur’s rivers Swarnrekha and Kharkai, calling for immediate action and comprehensive planning.

JAMSHEDPUR – A crucial meeting was held on Sunday under the leadership of Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy to discuss the preservation of the city’s lifelines, the Swarnrekha and Kharkai rivers.

Representatives of environmental organizations and officials from all three bodies – JNAC, Mango Municipal Corporation, and Jugsalai Municipal Council – were in attendance.

During the meeting, discussions centered on conservation strategies for both rivers.

Detailed briefings were also given on ongoing schemes aimed at river protection.

MLA Saryu Roy highlighted plans for a significant protest on World Environment Day on June 5th to draw attention to the plight of the rivers.

Roy stated that while the rivers are essential for the city’s life, they are gradually degrading.

He called for identifying and penalizing responsible parties and applying pressure on the government to create a comprehensive conservation plan.

Sanjay Kumar, Special Officer of the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee, informed attendees about JNAC’s ongoing efforts in waste water management.

According to Kumar, JNAC will manage 10 of the city’s 17 drains, with JUSCO handling two. The organization is also developing a 32 MLD treatment plant for waste water management.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain, notably the water hyacinths proliferating in the rivers, he said.

A plan to address this issue is in development, he added.

MLA Roy emphasized the need for collective action, calling on all organizations to put aside differences and collaborate on a detailed conservation plan.

He also urged the government to secure a commitment from Orissa to release water for both rivers throughout the year.

Saryu Roy stressed the need to develop an action plan for the protection of its vital rivers, Subarnarekha and Kharkai and said that if it is not done soon, the future of city’s lifelines will remain hanging in the balance.
