Hundreds of protesters face death penalty in Iran

Iran is prosecuting scores of people of various classes, groups and professions who participated in the protests that spread across Iran over the death of Kurdish young woman Mahsa Amini. Mahsa Amini is also known as Jina Amini.

Meanwhile, two people have been executed this month. At least 100 protesters, including five women on death row, are now under threat of execution.

An organization called Iran Human Rights (IHR) based in Norway said that these people could not hire any lawyers for themselves. As a result, they are completely deprived of justice.

According to reports, the IHR says the actual number of people awaiting death row in the country is hard to come by. Because the Iranian government is pressuring these families to keep quiet. Human rights organizations called the trial a ‘farce’.

Among the convicts there are youths, people of various professions including teachers or engineers. Two of them are Mohsen Shekari and Majidreza Rahnavard. They are only in their 20s. The country’s government accused those who participated in the protest of enmity against the creator and sentenced them to death in the Revolutionary Court on national security issues.

According to the IHR report, none of the 100 people sentenced to death were able to access a lawyer and go through the proper process of trial.

Another youth sentenced to death is Mohammad Ghovadlu. He has been accused of involvement in a violence in Tehran. His mother said that this young man is mentally ill. He was sentenced to death in the name of speedy trial, he did not get any legal aid.

Amnesty International has also expressed concern about these issues.

Five women are among those sentenced to death. Among them, a Kurdish teacher and human rights activist named Mozgan Kavousi is facing the death penalty.

Kavousi has been charged with inciting people through posts on social media, a lawyer said.
