Prof Digambar Hansda passes away

Jharkhand loses its most stellar cultural doyen, Padma Shri Award recipient’s demise irreparable loss to state

Jamshedpur: Professor Digambar Hansda, the cultural doyen of Jharkhand, and a Padma Shri Award recipient for his contribution to culture and literature, is no more. He passed away on Thursday at his residence at Karandih. He was 82 years.

The news about his demise sent a shock wave across Jharkhand. The Chief Minister Hemant Soren also condoled his death and expressed grief.

As soon as the news of his demise reached the people, several eminent personalities, including the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Raghubar Das, Minister Champai Soren, Potka MLA Sanjeev Sardar and several other personalities reached his residence and condoled his death.

The state government has announced his state honours for him.

The DC and SSP of East Singhbhum also reached his residence and offered tributes with state honours.

Prof Digambar Hansda was awarded with Padma Shri in 2015 for his contribution to Santhali literature. He devoted his whole life to development, propagation and enrichment of Santhali literature. He wrote several articles on the subject.

Late Prof. Digambar Hansda had retired as the Principal of LBSM College in 1995.

He is survived by two sons and two daughters.

The DC of East Singhbhum Suraj Kumar described his demise as an irreparable loss for Jharkhand.
