Government Initiative to Turn West Singhbhum Into a Major Fish Culture Centre

The mineral-rich region of West Singhbhum is set to undergo a significant transition, as the state government launches an initiative to transform abandoned mines into large fish ponds, promoting fish production in the area.

Jamshedpur – The region of West Singhbhum, rich in minerals and known for its mining industry, is poised to experience a transformative shift towards becoming a flourishing fish culture centre. To this end, the state government has launched an initiative aimed at converting abandoned and non-functional mines into substantial fish ponds, thereby encouraging the development of fish farming in the area.

This significant development was kicked off with the inauguration of a fish market in Chaibasa, West Singhbhum.

The opening ceremony was attended by Badal Patralekh, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Cooperative Department, marking the start of an ambitious government project designed to tap into the latent potential of the mining region and convert it into a productive centre for fish culture.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren conceived the initiative with the aim to provide realistic economic alternatives to the locals, while also addressing nutritional security through an ample supply of protein derived from fish consumption.

Minister Patralekh highlighted the importance of this project, pointing out the large number of iron ore mines that can be transformed into bodies of water suitable for fish farming.

As part of the project, the fisheries department will extend financial assistance at discounted rates and expert guidance on methods of fish farming, intending to stimulate the growth of fish culture. Furthermore, the government seeks to establish a robust market to support the supply chain and demand for the fish growers.

Among those who attended the ceremony were Ananya Mittal, the deputy commissioner for West Singhbhum, Geeta Koda, Deepak Birua, the local MLA, and senior officials from the state’s fisheries department.

Their participation underscores the collective commitment to the success of the initiative and its potential to enhance the economic and quality of life in the area.

As West Singhbhum embarks on its journey to become a significant fish production centre, the region can look forward to a future filled with increased job opportunities and easier access to nutritious food. Leveraging its abundant mineral resources for a new purpose, the area is set to become a paragon of sustainable growth and innovative reimagining in the agricultural industry.

With the fisheries department’s full backing, including financial aid at discounted rates, expertise in fish farming, and assurance of a viable market, West Singhbhum is ready to transition from its mining legacy into a thriving fish farming hub, promising a more prosperous and sustainable future for the region.
