ASI Accused of Assault and Extortion in Gudabanda

Mother Claims Rs 35,000 Paid for Son’s Release from Police Custody

Incident sparks outrage, prompting calls for immediate action against the accused officer.

JAMSHEDPUR – A serious allegation of police misconduct has emerged from Gudabanda, where ASI A Kumar stands accused of assaulting and extorting money from a local vendor.

Bharti Devi claims her son, Subhash Bera (27), was beaten and detained by ASI Kumar on July 15 near Bada Asti.

The family alleges they were forced to pay Rs 35,000 for Subhash’s release from police custody.

Subhash, who sells samosas and pakodas from a handcart, was reportedly returning from Dumaria when the incident occurred.

DSP Sandeep Bhagat stated, “We are thoroughly investigating the allegations and will take appropriate action based on our findings.”

Details of the Incident

Subhash was allegedly taken to the police station and further assaulted by other officers.

ASI Kumar allegedly initially demanded Rs 1 lakh for Subhash’s release, later agreeing to Rs 35,000.

Bharti Devi borrowed money from neighbors and relatives to secure her son’s freedom.

The accused ASI admitted to bringing Subhash to the station but denied involvement in any assault.

Community and Political Response

MLA Sameer Mohanty of Baharagora demanded immediate suspension of ASI Kumar.

“Such behavior from police officers will not be tolerated. We expect the ASI’s suspension by Friday evening,” Mohanty asserted.

Local residents expressed anger, calling for swift action against the accused officer.

Bharti Devi demanded strict punitive measures, stating, “Officers who harass the poor should be dismissed immediately.”

Ongoing Investigation

DSP Sandeep Bhagat, overseeing the case, assured that the law would be applied equally to all, including police personnel.

The findings of the investigation will be reported to the SSP for further action.

This incident has raised concerns about police conduct and the need for accountability in law enforcement.
