No help received during treatment, anger among family members

Patamada: The tragic road accident that took place on May 23 in Seemagoda village, Bodam police station area of East Singhbhum district, came to a tragic end on Sunday when seriously injured woman Usha Murmu died during treatment at RIMS, Ranchi. After the death of the woman, there was anger among the family members and villagers. The family refused to perform the last rites demanding compensation, after which the police and public representatives had to intervene.
According to the information, at around 12 o’clock on the night of May 23, a speeding trailer went out of control on the Asanbani-Patamada main road and entered the house of Sankari Hembram, breaking a 33 thousand volt electric pole. Sankari Hembram and her daughter Usha Murmu, who were sleeping in the courtyard of the house at the time of the accident, were seriously injured. With the help of local people, both were immediately taken to MGM Hospital. Since Usha’s condition was critical, she was referred to RIMS, Ranchi for better treatment.
Usha Murmu breathed her last on Sunday after struggling for life and death for almost a week. After post-mortem, his body reached Tungburu village late at night. As soon as the dead body reached the village, the family members and villagers expressed their anger against the administration and the vehicle owner. His allegation was that after the accident, the victim’s family was not taken care of at any level nor was any help provided during treatment.
The family stopped the last rites demanding compensation. On receiving information about the matter, MLA representative Chandrashekhar Tudu and District Councilor Pradeep Besra contacted the police administration. On Monday morning, Bodam and Patmada police station in-charge reached the village and talked to the villagers. During the conversation, the villagers raised questions on the functioning of the police and said that no officer came to meet the family for a week after the accident.
During the talks, the MLA representative assured to provide compensation of Rs 4 lakh under the government provision and also to ensure proper compensation from the vehicle owner. Besides, immediate financial assistance of Rs 10,000 was also provided for the last rites. Apart from this, the vehicle owner was assured to be called to Bodam police station and talks regarding compensation would be held. After getting the assurance, the family agreed to perform the last rites.
It is said that about 40 year old Usha Murmu had come to her maternal home in Seemagora on 23 May. He died after being seriously injured in an accident that same night. She is survived by her husband, two daughters and a son. The elder daughter studies in 12th class, the younger daughter in eighth class and the son in fifth class. Usha’s untimely death has brought a deep crisis of grief to the family.
