Key Points:

- 10 killed, several injured, hospitalised at LNJP Hospital
- Amit Shah visits site, orders high-level probe into explosion
NEW DELHI – A powerful explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening killed ten people and injured several others, triggering a nationwide alert.
The explosion occurred inside a parked i20 car near the iconic monument. The impact shattered windows of nearby vehicles and sparked fires across the area. Several vehicles were gutted before firefighters managed to control the blaze. Police immediately sealed off the area.
According to Delhi Police officials, the injured were rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital for emergency treatment. Many sustained severe burns and glass injuries. “The scene was chaotic, with smoke everywhere,” said a local eyewitness.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah to review the situation. Shah later visited LNJP Hospital to meet the victims and assured full medical support.

In addition, the Home Minister chaired a high-level meeting with Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha and senior officials. “Every possibility is being examined,” Shah said after the briefing. Forensic teams have collected samples from the site to determine the cause.
However, officials have not ruled out foul play. A senior police source said that the nature of the blast suggests “use of high-intensity material.” Anti-terror units have joined the investigation.
Moreover, opposition leaders and social groups have condemned the explosion and called for stronger preventive measures. The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed all states to maintain strict vigilance in crowded areas.
On the other hand, the National Security Guard (NSG) and National Investigation Agency (NIA) are likely to assist in forensic analysis. Preliminary reports indicate the blast may have originated from the car’s trunk. The Red Fort area, which is a major tourist hub, remains under tight security.
Authorities have imposed temporary restrictions in central Delhi and around major government buildings. Traffic diversions are in place, and sniffer dogs are being used to scan nearby vehicles.
As investigation continues, Delhi remains tense under heightened alert. The police urged citizens to avoid speculation and report any suspicious activities immediately.
