CHAIBASA – Panic spread in Kolbonga village under Jarai Kela police station after CPI (Maoist) insurgents set fire to an Airtel mobile tower late Saturday night.
The attack occurred during the outfit’s ongoing “Protest Week,” which aims to target government assets and disrupt communications. Earlier on Friday, Naxals had triggered four explosions, killing Head Constable Mahendra Laskar and seriously injuring two officers. The injured were airlifted to Delhi for treatment.
However, after the tower arson, communication services in the region were disrupted. Local sources said the Maoists wanted to block network coverage and hinder security operations.
In response, Chaibasa police and CRPF teams began an extensive search operation in the area. Meanwhile, fear and uncertainty gripped nearby villages as residents remained indoors.
A security source said, “The attack was aimed at creating fear and isolating the region from communication links.” Security forces have intensified patrolling to prevent further incidents.
Besides, authorities are assessing the extent of damage to restore mobile connectivity soon. The region has seen several similar attacks in the past during Maoist observances.
