JAMSHEDPUR – Social and political organizations gathered at Sakchi Shaheed Chowk on Friday to honor three student martyrs who died during the JP movement.
The tribute assembly was organized by multiple committees. Shaheed Smarak Nirman Samiti led the coordination efforts. Moreover, JP Yuva Chhatra Sangharsh Morcha participated actively.
Jharkhand Kranti Sena also joined the commemorative event. Various social organizations attended the gathering. However, prominent citizens from across the city participated.
The event honored three student leaders killed in 1974. Pranab Mukherjee died during the anti-government protests. Meanwhile, Rajiv Ranjan and Mohammad Museem also sacrificed their lives.
These students were protesting under Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan’s leadership. They opposed the government’s oppressive policies during that period. Furthermore, police firing claimed their lives on July 18.
The incident occurred in the Sakchi area of Jamshedpur. Annual commemoration events have continued since that tragic day. Besides, the site has become synonymous with student sacrifice.
Committee coordinator Sanjeev Acharya addressed the gathering. He emphasized the government’s prolonged negligence toward memorial construction. Moreover, administrative promises have remained unfulfilled for years.
Acharya criticized the state government’s failure to preserve martyrs’ memory. He stated that permanent memorial construction remains pending. However, only assurances have been provided without concrete action.
Organizations present at the assembly made joint demands. They sought formal declaration of Sakchi Shaheed Chowk as martyrs’ site. Meanwhile, permanent memorial construction topped their priority list.
The proposed memorial should feature statues of all three martyrs. Proper seating arrangements must be provided for visitors. Furthermore, inscriptions and lighting facilities require installation.
Organizations demanded annual government-level commemoration events. They emphasized the need for official recognition of martyrs’ sacrifice. Besides, educational institutions should teach students about their contribution.
The gathering highlighted the continuing struggle for memorial construction. Citizens expect the administration to honor these brave students. However, political will remains essential for meaningful progress.
Local organizations have maintained pressure on authorities for decades. They organize annual events to keep martyrs’ memory alive. Meanwhile, the demand for permanent memorial continues growing.
