Congress Leader and Labor Union Chief Passes Away in Delhi Hospital

JAMSHEDPUR – Former Jharkhand minister and senior Congress leader Chandrashekar Dube, popularly known as Dadai Dube, passed away at Sir Gangaram Hospital in New Delhi on Thursday after prolonged illness.

The 79-year-old veteran politician breathed his last at the premier medical facility where he had been undergoing treatment for several days. He was born on January 2, 1946, and served as a cabinet minister in the Jharkhand government.

Dube represented the Bishrampur constituency in Palamu district six times as MLA. Moreover, he also served as Member of Parliament from Dhanbad constituency. Additionally, the veteran leader held the position of Rural Development Minister in Hemant Soren’s government from August 2013.

The late politician was a prominent labor union leader. He served as general secretary of Rashtiya Koyla Mazdoor Sangh. Furthermore, Dube was affiliated with the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC).

However, he was later removed from INTUC by its working committee for anti-union activities. Subsequently, he falsely claimed to be the president of INTUC. Meanwhile, the All India Congress Committee clarified he was not the real president.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed deep condolences over his demise. He described Dube’s death as an irreparable loss for the state. Moreover, Soren praised his lifelong dedication to people’s rights.

Former Chief Minister Raghubar Das also mourned the veteran’s death. He extended condolences to the bereaved family members. Besides, state minister Deepika Pandey Singh called him a guiding figure.

Rajesh Thakur, former Jharkhand Congress president, had visited Dube at the hospital on July 9. He had inquired about the leader’s health condition. However, Dube’s condition deteriorated subsequently.

The labor leader was known for his vocal advocacy. He consistently raised voice for workers’ rights throughout his career. In addition, Dube remained active in grassroots politics.

Dube also served on the senate of Nilamber Pitamber University. He was nominated by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly Speaker. Besides, he was involved in various social welfare activities.

The veteran politician faced legal troubles in July 2015. He was arrested for misbehaving with police and sent to judicial custody. However, he continued his political activities after release.

Political leaders across party lines paid tributes to the deceased leader. They remembered his contributions to labor movement in Jharkhand. Meanwhile, his supporters described him as a voice of workers.
