Tata Steel Pioneers Hydrogen Transport Pipe Technology in India
Company Successfully Tests API X65 ERW Pipes for Pure Hydrogen Transportation
First Indian steel company develops end-to-end capabilities for hydrogen transportation infrastructure, supporting National Hydrogen Mission objectives.
Key Points:
- First Indian company to develop hydrogen-ready steel pipes
- Successfully tested at RINA-CSM S.p.A in Italy
- Pipes can transport pure hydrogen under 100 bar pressure
JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel achieves milestone in developing pipes for hydrogen transportation infrastructure.
The company’s Khopoli plant processed the groundbreaking API X65 ERW pipes. Tests proved successful.
Meanwhile, the steel originated from their Kalinganagar facility. The development process remained in-house.
Technical Achievement
The pipes underwent rigorous testing in Italy. RINA-CSM S.p.A validated their performance.
Moreover, these pipes can handle 100% pure gaseous hydrogen. They withstand high pressure conditions.
Market Impact
The demand for hydrogen-compliant steel will emerge by 2026-27. Requirements may reach 350KT.
Furthermore, steel pipelines offer economical mass transportation solutions. Market potential grows significantly.
Mission Alignment
This development supports India’s National Hydrogen Mission. Green hydrogen production targets expand.
“We’re proud to contribute to India’s clean energy transition,” stated Prabhat Kumar.
The company continues developing sustainable hydrogen solutions through research initiatives.
