Former Minister and State Government Blamed for Garbage Crisis

JAMSHEDPUR – Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy criticized the Jharkhand government and the former state health minister for their negligence in addressing Mango Municipal Corporation’s garbage disposal crisis. He stated that despite declaring Mango a municipal corporation, no proper arrangement for waste management was made.
NGT Orders and Government Inaction
Roy pointed out that on April 8, 2023, the East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner, Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board, and Mango Municipal Corporation had assured the National Green Tribunal (NGT) of identifying a garbage dumping site soon. They had also promised to beautify the existing dumping ground in Sonari. Despite a tender of ₹2 crore being issued, no action was taken.
He said, “The government submitted an affidavit to the NGT but failed to act, worsening the problem over time.”
Roy Suggests Three Solutions
Roy held discussions with the East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner and proposed three alternatives for waste disposal:
- Select a dumping site near the Mango Municipal Corporation area.
- Follow JNAC’s model by sending Mango’s waste to Tata Steel’s Bara dumping plant.
- Transport Mango’s garbage to Adityapur, where a waste disposal plant is being developed for Mango, Jugsalai, and Adityapur regions.
He also emphasized the need to install compactors in Mango to compress garbage and reduce its volume for easier transportation.
Criticism of Delays and Negligence
Roy expressed surprise over the government’s inaction despite years passing since Mango’s designation as a municipal corporation. He questioned why no action was taken by the former local representative or the state government during their five-year majority rule.
Roy warned, “If the government and municipal corporation fail to address this crisis soon, residents of Mango will rise against the administration.”
Call for Immediate Action
The MLA reiterated that the Urban Development Department must take responsibility and act swiftly. He accused the government of discriminating against Mango and failing to resolve its waste management issues, despite annual claims of achieving cleanliness awards.
