Tigress ‘Jinnat’ from Odisha Spotted Near Chakulia, Rescue Underway

Forest Departments Collaborate to Safely Capture Tigress

Key Points:

  • Tigress ‘Jinnat’ crosses railway track near Chakulia
  • Rescue teams from Odisha and Jharkhand mobilized
  • Local villagers gather near forest area amid rescue efforts

CHAKULIA – A tigress named ‘Jinnat’, recently arrived from Odisha, was sighted near Chakulia, prompting joint rescue operations by forest officials.

In the early hours of Wednesday, ‘Jinnat’ crossed the railway track from the Maurbeda forest and entered the woods near Chiyabandhi’s Sidho-Kanho Chowk in Bhaktunda Panchayat. Upon locating her, forest department teams from Odisha and Chakulia initiated rescue preparations. The presence of the tigress attracted a crowd of local villagers near the forest area.

To facilitate the rescue, officials transported three buffaloes to the site using a pickup van, aiming to lure ‘Jinnat’ into a trap cage positioned nearby. The plan involves tying the buffaloes in the forest to attract the tigress, enabling a safe capture. Given the limited forest cover in the region, authorities are optimistic about a successful rescue. Chakulia’s Acting Forest Range Officer, Digvijay Singh, confirmed that the team is fully prepared for the operation.

Notably, in November 2024, a tigress named ‘Jamuna’ was released into Odisha’s Simlipal Tiger Reserve after being relocated from Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

The collaborative efforts of the Odisha and Jharkhand forest departments underscore the commitment to wildlife conservation and public safety.
