JAMSHEDPUR – Local committees and residents protested against Tata Steel’s attempt to fence the Burmamines Durga Puja ground, demanding preservation of the cultural site.

The historic ground, located in Burmamines, Jamshedpur, hosts Durga Puja celebrations annually, organized by two prominent committees. Tata Steel’s team arrived to fence the area, prompting a strong reaction from committee members and residents, who viewed the move as an attack on cultural traditions.

Local police were called to mediate between both parties, but tensions continue to escalate.

Cultural Significance and Public Sentiments

The BJP leader Satveer Singh Somu criticized Tata Steel for disregarding cultural and religious sentiments. He stated, “The company is only interested in commercializing open spaces under the pretext of beautification. This ground holds historical and cultural significance, which Tata Steel seems to ignore completely.”

The committees argued that the fencing would deprive locals of a space that has hosted traditional celebrations for decades. They warned of intensified protests if the activity does not stop immediately.

Traffic and Environmental Concerns

Residents also expressed frustration over other pressing issues caused by Tata Steel’s operations. Heavy trucks from the company have increased congestion in the Burmamines area, causing frequent traffic jams and accidents. In addition, locals accused the company of contributing to rising pollution levels.

One resident said, “Tata Steel’s activities are making life difficult here. Instead of solving pollution and traffic issues, they are seizing our cultural spaces.”

As protests continue, local residents are uniting to plan a larger movement against Tata Steel’s actions. They demand that the company stop all fencing activities and address existing concerns like traffic congestion and pollution.
