Seven Central Jails to Receive Free Multilingual Book Collections

JAMSHEDPUR – A transformative library initiative is set to enhance educational access across seven Jharkhand central jails.
Hindustani Prachar Sabha leads this groundbreaking program. The organization will provide over 5,000 books.
Meanwhile, modern storage facilities are being installed. Each jail will receive 15 new book racks.
Here are the participating central jails:
- Birsa Munda Central Jail, Ranchi (capacity: 3,187 inmates)
- Jai Prakash Narayan Central Jail, Hazaribagh (capacity: 2,654 inmates)
- Central Jail, Ghaghidih (capacity: 2,123 inmates)
- Dumka Central Jail (capacity: 1,876 inmates)
- Deoghar Central Jail (capacity: 1,543 inmates)
- Giridih Central Jail (capacity: 1,432 inmates)
- Palamu Central Jail (capacity: 1,765 inmates)
Moreover, the books cover eight different languages. These include Hindi, English, and Urdu.
Furthermore, local languages enhance accessibility for regional inmates. Santhali and Khortha books are included.
“Reading transforms lives behind bars,” says a correctional expert. The initiative builds on existing library programs.
Additionally, prison education shows positive results. Inmate literacy rates increased by 62% since 2020.
In fact, similar programs reduced recidivism by 43%. The new initiative expands these successful efforts.
Besides, district jails will receive libraries soon. Plans target 15 district facilities.
On the other hand, digital cataloging systems are being considered. Modern management systems will track book circulation.
