DHANBAD – Gunfire rang out for the second time within 24 hours in Baghmara, Dhanbad, near a shut outsourcing mine on the Dhanbad-Katras main road under the Angarpathara OP area, with no casualties reported in either incident.
The latest incident involved RCMU labour leader Mo Zuber and his brothers. According to the victim, a group of men arrived at the spot and attacked them. During the assault, the attackers allegedly pressed a weapon against them and threatened to kill them. Three rounds of fire were also discharged during the confrontation.
Mo Zuber’s mother, speaking in a trembling voice, also corroborated the sequence of events and narrated the entire episode as it unfolded.
Mo Zuber himself alleged that the attack was directly linked to his opposition to illegal coal mining in the area. He said he had been actively raising his voice against the unlawful coal trade operating in Baghmara, and the assault was meant to silence him.
Baghmara has been witnessing a surge in firing incidents, with both episodes within 24 hours believed to be connected to rivalries over control of the illegal coal trade. A reliable source said the emboldened conduct of coal smugglers has become a serious concern for local residents and workers alike.
Angarpathara police station in-charge Praveen Kumar confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. He said all aspects connected to the firing incident are being examined and that legal action will be taken on the basis of the application filed.
Meanwhile, the repeated firing incidents in Baghmara have created an atmosphere of fear. Locals say the brazenness of those involved in the illegal coal business has reached alarming levels.
