JAMSHEDPUR – A tragic accident at Char Khamba Chowk in Parsudih claimed the life of a daily wage worker, Gopal Mahali, and left others injured, including a Tata Steel contract worker.
The high-speed incident unfolded late Saturday evening. An out-of-control pickup van struck an auto-rickshaw head-on and then collided with a scooter. Gopal Mahali, a Potka resident, was returning home in the auto after work. The impact gravely injured him, and despite being rushed to Sadar Hospital, he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, the scooter rider, identified as Bajra Hansda from Karandih, sustained injuries. A contract worker at Tata Steel, he was also commuting home when the van hit his vehicle, leaving his scooter badly damaged.
Local residents captured the van driver at the scene and reportedly assaulted him before police intervened. Authorities have since detained the driver and impounded the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses noted that the van’s reckless speed was the primary cause. Gopal, seated at the side of the auto, was directly in harm’s way when the van sideswiped the auto.
The injured, including Bajra, are undergoing treatment, while the police investigation is ongoing. Road safety concerns in Parsudih remain a pressing issue, with frequent accidents reported at busy intersections like Char Khamba Chowk.
