JAMSHEDPUR – During Chhath festivities, the Koyal River claimed four young lives in two separate drowning incidents across Garhwa district.

A 17-year-old girl, Niharika Kumari, lost her life while bathing near Gate No. 7 of Bhim Barrage.

“This tragic incident has cast a shadow over the Chhath celebrations,” stated a local resident, witnessing the recovery operations.

Two companions, including her brother, were successfully rescued from the waters.

The family had visited their maternal grandparents’ home in Checharia village for Chhath celebrations.

Changing Face of Tragedy

The incident occurred when the family returned from shopping at Mohammad Ganj.

The victims’ father, Kunal Kishore Tiwari, immediately raised an alarm upon seeing the children struggling.

Local villagers quickly responded to help rescue two of the three children.

Second Tragic Episode

Three children – Piyush Kumar, Aman Kumar, and Fiza Khatun – went missing while bathing near Morbe village.

The sole survivor, Kajali, alerted villagers about the incident.

Block Development Officer Kanak and CO Pramod Kumar confirmed NDRF assistance had been requested.

Administrative Response

Station in-charge Akash and SI Nasim Ansari reached the site with their team.

The Bhim Barrage gate was opened to aid in search operations.

“Due to darkness, search operations have been suspended until morning,” explained BDO Kanak.
