CHAIBASA – Three members of a family were brutally murdered in the remote Naxal-affected region of Siankel, Champawa Panchayat, West Singhbhum, on Thursday night.
The victims, identified as Dugulu Purti (60), his wife Suku Horo (50), and daughter Daskir Purti (23), were attacked while sleeping at their home.
Unknown assailants beat them with sticks and sharp weapons, accusing them of practicing witchcraft.
After the attack, the killers tied ropes around their necks and dragged their bodies to a nearby forest in Churingkocha, where they were found by villagers gathering firewood the following morning.
The police, due to the remote location and Naxal influence, arrived at the scene on Saturday, along with CRPF forces, and retrieved the bodies for post-mortem.
The two younger daughters of the family, one working in Delhi and the other studying in a local school, survived as they were not home at the time.
The village has a history of witchcraft accusations, and the victims had been targeted in previous community meetings.
Police are conducting a detailed investigation into the killings, which have created an atmosphere of fear among the villagers.
