Over 200 PwDs showcase vocational skills at ‘Olympics of Abilities’

JAMSHEDPUR – The city hosts a unique competition celebrating the exceptional talents of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) from Eastern India.

The East Zone Regional Abilympics 2024 commenced on Thursday at Tata Steel Technical Institute.

Jharkhand’s Health Minister Banna Gupta inaugurated the event.

This competition, often called the ‘Olympics of Abilities,’ showcases PwDs’ vocational skills.

Over 200 participants from seven eastern states are competing in the event.

Notably, Northeastern states like Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya joined for the first time.

The National Abilympics Association of India (NAAI) organized this regional competition.

Minister Gupta emphasized the importance of inclusion and equal opportunities for PwDs.

He expressed pride in Jharkhand hosting this significant event.

Furthermore, Gupta called for continued collaboration between government and private sectors.

The event aims to build a more inclusive workforce across the region.

Several partners, including Tata Power and Tata Steel Foundation, supported the Abilympics.

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities also backed the competition.

This regional event is a stepping stone towards the 11th International Abilympics in Finland.

The international competition is scheduled for 2027.

A participant remarked, "This platform allows us to showcase our abilities, not our disabilities."
