JAMSHEDPUR – The Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata, now a World Athletics Gold Label race, is set to transform the City of Joy into a global running destination this December.

East India’s premier participative sporting event has reached new heights. The Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata, scheduled for December 15, 2024, has been awarded the prestigious World Athletics Gold Label.

This recognition comes after meeting stringent criteria, including organizational excellence and world-class standards. The race now boasts a substantial prize pool of USD 142,214, making it the world’s richest 25K event.

Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President of Corporate Services at Tata Steel, expressed his enthusiasm for the event’s elevated status. He stated, "This recognition affirms the race’s world-class standards, attracting elite athletes and showcasing Kolkata on the global stage."

The race has seen remarkable growth since its inception. There has been a significant increase in participation across timed categories, with women’s participation surging by over 270%.

Impact on Local Running Culture

The event has sparked a running revolution in the Northeast Region. Since 2014, there has been a 1700% growth in timed events across the area.

Currently, more than 75 races take place in the region, with 48 in West Bengal alone. This growth underscores the event’s role in fostering a vibrant running culture.

Philanthropic Efforts and Community Engagement

Beyond promoting fitness, the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata has become a platform for social good. The race has successfully raised INR 4.39 crores for various philanthropic causes.

An expert in community development remarked, "This event has not only promoted health and fitness but has also strengthened bonds within civil society, bringing the community together for meaningful causes."

Registration Details and Inclusivity

Registration for both on-ground and virtual participation opens on September 19, 2024. The organizers have made efforts to ensure inclusivity by reserving spots for women in the 25K and open 10K races.

Vivek Singh, Jt. MD of Procam International, shared his excitement about the upcoming event. "We are proud it has truly put West Bengal on the global running map," he stated, acknowledging the support of sponsors, city authorities, and the running community.
