JAMSHEDPUR – Former MP and senior Congress leader Dr. Ajoy Kumar has criticized the Modi government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ plan, calling it a move to alter the Indian Constitution.
In a press statement released on Thursday, Dr. Kumar said, “The BJP’s intention is to change the Constitution, and the ‘One Nation, One Election’ plan is the first step in that direction.”
He warned that the plan threatens India’s democratic structure and federalism.
According to Dr. Kumar, implementing ‘One Nation, One Election’ would require amendments to multiple articles of the Constitution, including Articles 83, 85, 172, 174, and 356.
He accused the BJP of trying to eliminate regional parties through this plan.
Dr. Kumar also raised concerns about the practicality of holding simultaneous elections across the country, stating that the government struggles to manage even state-level elections.
He questioned whether this plan could lead to the privatization of elections, suggesting that the government might outsource the election process due to resource constraints.
"How can a government that cannot handle elections in four states manage an election on a national scale?" he asked, calling the proposal another unfulfilled promise by the Modi government.
He emphasized that the Congress party and other political groups would not allow the BJP to succeed in its "plan to destroy democracy."
