JAMSHEDPUR – Solar energy expert Chetan Solanki, known as the ‘Solar Man of India,’ called for immediate action against climate change during his visit to Jamshedpur.
During an interactive session on "Energy Literacy" organized by CII Young Indians at the Centre for Excellence Auditorium, Solanki stressed the importance of collective efforts to combat climate change. The event, held on Monday, saw participation from 90 teachers representing over 60 schools in Jamshedpur.
Solanki, a professor at IIT Bombay and the founder of the Energy Swaraj Foundation, highlighted the significance of following the ‘AMG Principle’—Avoid, Minimize, and Generate—to conserve energy. He discussed the causes and potential solutions to climate change, urging individuals to take personal responsibility.
He warned that 80-85% of energy production still relies on fossil fuels, and the Earth has already warmed by 1.1°C since the industrial age. Immediate action is crucial to limit this to 1.5°C, as exceeding this threshold would lead to irreversible changes.
Solanki also introduced a ‘Climate Clock,’ demonstrating that only 4 years and 316 days remain to prevent the 1.5°C threshold. He offered practical tips on reducing energy usage and highlighted the environmental impact of daily activities like purchasing clothing or using electronics. He urged everyone to reduce energy consumption by one-third and advised caution in relying too heavily on solar energy, promoting local energy production as part of "Energy Swaraj."
Additionally, Solanki pointed out that the effects of carbon dioxide emissions can last for over 300 years. The event witnessed active participation from teachers and members of Young Indians, who pledged to turn the ‘Energy Swaraj’ movement into a mass movement to combat climate change and promote solar energy adoption.
Since November 2020, Solanki has been on the ‘Energy Swaraj Yatra,’ traveling in a solar-powered bus to raise awareness about climate change. He has been spreading the message of clean energy to millions of Indian families, following Gandhian principles to promote the concept of "Energy Swaraj."
