Supreme Court’s Suggestion on Reservation Sparks Bharat Bandh in West Singhbhum
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Joins Protest; Markets Shut, Transport Halted.
The Bharat Bandh called to oppose the Supreme Court’s suggestion on the categorization of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservations had a significant impact in West Singhbhum, with markets closed and vehicular movement halted.
CHAIBASA – The Bharat Bandh, organized in protest against the Supreme Court’s suggestion to categorize reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), saw widespread support in West Singhbhum on Wednesday, affecting daily life across the region.
Most markets remained closed, and transport services were brought to a standstill as protesters took to the streets.
The bandh received strong backing from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), whose leaders and members actively participated in the protests, blocking roads and disrupting traffic.
In Chaibasa, the district’s administrative center, the protestors, including tribal organizations and JMM members, blocked the main road at Tambo Chowk, causing major disruptions.
Essential services were the only exception, with everything else shut down.
Public bus services were also halted due to the bandh, leaving commuters stranded.
JMM leader Sunil Sirka stated that the proposed categorization of reservations is an attempt to divide the SC and ST communities, and that such actions would not be tolerated.
