The Porsche Pune crash case has yet to meet its final hearing. Attempts to arrange bail for the accused, who was a minor at the time of the accident, have recently faced vehement opposition.

The brutal molestation and murder case of the Kolkata lady doctor, which appeared simple at first but only grows more complex as time passes, is currently dominating the news channels.

These two incidents appear to have nothing in common, except for the fact that media reports hint that both of the probable accused might have been under the influence of alcohol.

Substance abuse a few years ago wasn’t as widespread as it is now. Earlier weekends meant drinking days, but now, with a change in work culture and more money flowing in, consumption has surged throughout.

Now, females have joined the smoking and drinking bandwagon. The most alarming aspect is that even minors are now a part of this (mis) sophisticated culture.

The word substance abuse conjures up images of morphine, heroin, and cocaine in most minds.

High-society parties heavily consume these substances, which are expensive and out of reach for the average middle class. This could potentially provide relief, but in reality, it doesn’t.

Within the definition of substance abuse come volatile hydrocarbons like gasoline and paint thinners. Cannabinoids such as hashish and marijuana also fall into this category.

Apart from these, there are several surprising items, such as the famous pain-relieving ointment, iodex.

They also include the cough syrup Corex, which faced a ban in 2016.

Despite the authorities sealing the samples, sales of Corex continued. Additionally, the production of cheap and counterfeit alcohol is a cause for concern at and around local festivals. People from the lower echelons of society consume these products.

Sometimes, the consumption of these products can lead to life-threatening conditions.

Substance abuse has permeated every nook and cranny of society. People engage in crimes that initially appear implausible.

While justice in the two cases awaits results sooner than later, substance abuse needs better awareness and modifications to the rules and sales.
