Workshop on Rose Disease and Nutrient Management Held in Jamshedpur

Event marks preparation for the 41st All India Rose Convention and 34th Annual Flower Show.

A workshop on "Rose: Disease and Nutrient Management" was conducted by the Horticultural Society of Jamshedpur on July 28, 2024, at SNTI Auditorium.

JAMSHEDPUR – In preparation for the 41st All India Rose Convention and the 34th Annual Flower Show, the Horticultural Society of Jamshedpur organized a workshop on "Rose: Disease and Nutrient Management" on July 28, 2024, at SNTI Auditorium.

The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest, Atreyi Sanyal, Vice President of HRM at Tata Steel.

Sumita Nupur, President of the Horticultural Society of Jamshedpur, highlighted the importance of the workshop in her welcome speech.

Chief guest Atreyi Sanyal emphasized the therapeutic benefits of gardening in today’s busy life dominated by TV and mobile screens.

She mentioned that gardening provides stress relief and peace of mind.

Ms. Sanyal noted that roses are commonly grown in European countries, similar to marigolds and bougainvillea in India.

She explained that roses require significant nutrition and care.

Baran Maity introduced the esteemed faculty member and renowned rose breeder Sanjay Mukherjee, Vice President of the Eastern Region of the Indian Rose Federation, Kolkata.

Mr. Mukherjee has been honored with the prestigious "Bijay Pokharna" Rose Gold Medal by the Indian Rose Federation.

Mr. Mukherjee spoke about the importance of pot culture of roses in West Bengal and Jamshedpur, noting that it is not as widespread in Western countries.

He informed participants that there are around 3,000 species of roses in India and advised focusing on cultivating Indian rose varieties more suited to the local climate.

He said Jamshedpur’s climate is particularly conducive to growing roses.

Mr. Mukherjee detailed the effective control of various plant diseases such as scale, rust, black spots, canker, and dieback.

He distributed a paper detailing the recommended schedule for regular nutrition of rose plants to the participants.

At the end of the program, certificates were presented to the participants by Sumita Nupur, President of the Horticultural Society of Jamshedpur, and BK Maity, Vice President.

Around 150 individuals from various organizations and educational institutions, including Kolhan University and other colleges, attended the workshop.

Participants came from various states such as Odisha (Cuttack, Sambalpur, Bhubaneswar), West Bengal (Kolkata, Midnapore), and Jharkhand (Ranchi, Noamundi).
