Zoo Expansion: Tata Steel Zoological Park to Welcome New Species

Leopards, Crocodiles, and Zebra to Join Jamshedpur’s Wildlife Collection

Tata Zoo set to enhance its animal roster through exchange programs, introducing diverse species from across India.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel Zoological Park prepares for significant expansion with incoming animals from various parts of the country.

The Tata Steel Zoological Park is gearing up for an exciting transformation as it prepares to welcome a diverse array of new inhabitants.

The zoo’s animal population is set to grow with the addition of several species, including leopards, crocodiles, and a zebra.

This expansion is part of a carefully planned exchange program involving multiple zoological institutions across India.

"We’re thrilled to be bringing in these new animals to enrich our zoo’s biodiversity," stated Naim Akhtar, Deputy Director of Tata Zoo.

The exchange program, approved by the Central Zoo Authority, will see four leopards arriving from Nagpur, a crocodile from Chennai, and a zebra from Jamnagar.

In return, Tata Zoo will be sending out some of its Mandrills to the participating institutions.

The zoo is also making preparations to house Anaconda snakes, with enclosure expansions already underway to accommodate these impressive reptiles.

Additionally, the Central Zoo Authority has given the green light for the zoo to acquire four more crocodiles.

"These additions are in line with the Guideline Exchange Programme, ensuring ethical and beneficial animal transfers," Akhtar explained.

The exchange process is scheduled to take place between August and October of this year.

To support this influx of new residents, the zoo is undertaking several infrastructure improvements.

A state-of-the-art veterinary hospital has been constructed within the zoo premises and is slated for inauguration in August.

New enclosures are also being built, with completion expected by the next fiscal year.

"We’re not just expanding our animal collection, but also enhancing our facilities to ensure the best care for all our inhabitants," Akhtar added.

In a move to diversify its attractions, the zoo is also developing a new butterfly park.

This expansion project marks a significant step in Tata Steel Zoological Park’s commitment to conservation and education.
