Former MLA Cites Party’s Indifference to Regional Issues
In a setback to BJP in Jamshedpur, Kunal Sarangi, a prominent political figure from East Singhbhum, has stepped down from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), citing the party’s lack of responsiveness to local concerns.
JAMSHEDPUR – In a significant political development and a potential setback to BJP in Jamshedpur just before the Assembly elections, Kunal Sarangi, former MLA and influential leader from East Singhbhum, has tendered his resignation from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sarangi’s decision, communicated through a letter dated July 7, 2024, to the BJP’s Jharkhand State President, marks a notable setback for the party in the region, although the move was expected in the political circles for some time.

It is not yet clear what his next political move would be and whether he would join any other political party or not.
Sarangi, in his resignation letter, expressed deep disappointment with the BJP’s approach to addressing the fundamental issues plaguing East Singhbhum district.
He stated, “For several months, I have been distressed to observe that the party leadership, including you and other senior officials, have shown complete indifference to the pressing problems and sensitive issues of East Singhbhum district that I’ve repeatedly brought to your attention.”
The former legislator highlighted his growing disillusionment with the party’s functioning:
1. Lack of attention to regional issues: Sarangi also emphasized that despite his efforts to raise local concerns, the party remained unresponsive.
2. Disconnect with constituents: He also pointed out the apparent gap between elected representatives and the public, particularly on matters of basic infrastructure and youth concerns.
3. Absence of proactive leadership: Sarangi also expressed dismay at the lack of initiative from the state leadership in addressing these challenges.
“It is disheartening that no concrete steps have been taken by the state leadership to address these issues despite my requests. I find myself unable to align with a working style that seems detached from the primary objective of serving in politics,” Sarangi remarked in his letter.
The resignation of Kunal Sarangi, who has been a vocal advocate for regional development, raises questions about the BJP’s strategy in addressing local issues in Jharkhand.
Political analysts suggest this move could potentially impact the party’s standing in East Singhbhum and surrounding areas just before the Assembly elections.
As the political landscape in Jharkhand continues to evolve, Sarangi’s departure from the BJP may lead to a realignment of political forces in the region, with other parties likely to court the influential leader. Kunal Sarangi has been active in Jamshedpur and is quite popular among the youth too. Although, his exit was expected for some time, it would still come as a setback for BJP, analysts suggest.
