Vehicles Trapped as Water Fills Low-Lying City Roads

JAMSHEDPUR – A spell of relentless rainfall brought the city to a standstill on Wednesday, leaving residents grappling with severe waterlogging across several low-lying neighborhoods. A period of intense showers slowed the pace of life throughout the city.
Roads submerged under knee-deep water made commuting extremely difficult for residents. The sustained downpour caused waterlogging in many of the city’s lower-lying pockets. Streets turned into shallow rivers within a matter of hours.
Localities including Sakchi, Mango, Kadma, Golmuri and Bistupur saw their roads go completely underwater. However, the flooding did not spare vehicles either. Several four-wheelers and two-wheelers got stuck in the standing water, with some vehicles submerged nearly halfway. Traffic backed up at multiple points after stalled vehicles blocked the way.
Commuters returning from markets and offices bore the brunt of the sudden cloudburst. People heading home from markets and workplaces faced considerable hardship as the rain intensified without warning. Meanwhile, residents voiced sharp criticism of civic authorities over the recurring problem.
The failure of the drainage system prompted local people to question the municipal administration’s handling of the situation and demand a lasting solution. A local resident said the same low-lying stretches flood every monsoon without any permanent fix. In addition, similar disruptions have previously hit the Parsudih and Telco localities during heavy spells, according to past civic complaints.
On the other hand, the district’s disaster response teams have in earlier incidents flagged waterlogging risks near the Tatanagar railway stretch as well. The meteorological department has forecast continued heavy rainfall in the city and surrounding areas over the coming days.
Besides the immediate disruption, authorities have urged caution among residents. The district administration appealed to people to avoid venturing into waterlogged zones unnecessarily and to remain alert. Officials indicated that emergency response teams are on standby should conditions worsen further.
Moreover, past monsoon seasons have seen similar rain-related disruptions across Jamshedpur, with civic bodies repeatedly promising drainage upgrades that residents say remain incomplete.
