Court Urges Swift Witness Presentation in Mob Lynching Case

Testimony in the 2017 Nagadih mob lynching case continued on Wednesday in the court of ADJ-8 Pattadar, Jamshedpur.

JAMSHEDPUR – Uttam Verma’s testimony was recorded on Wednesday in the court of ADJ-8 Pattadar, who is hearing the case of stone pelting on police, deadly attack, and obstruction in government work during the 2017 Nagadih mob lynching incident.

The testimony remains incomplete.

The court directed Additional Public Prosecutor Sudhir Toppo to expedite the presentation of witnesses in the case.

Under the direction of the Jharkhand High Court, the case is to be heard daily to ensure a swift resolution.

Further testimony will be recorded on Thursday.

On the evening of May 18, 2017, three people were killed on the spot in Nagadih due to a rumor of child theft, while the grandmother of one of the deceased, Ramsakhi Devi, succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

The deceased include Vikas Verma and Gautam Verma from Naya Bazar Jugsalai, and their companion Gangesh Gupta from Baghbeda Gadhabasa.

When the police arrived at the scene during the incident, an enraged mob attacked the police jeep and hurled stones, resulting in serious injuries to the policemen.

A case was registered based on the statement of then Baghbeda police station in-charge Amish Hussain, involving charges of murderous attack, serious injury to the policemen, vandalism, and obstruction in government work.

There are 22 accused in the case, including Mukhiya Rajaram Hansda, Gram Pradhan Bhishma Sardar, Doctor Mardi, Subhash Hansda, and others.

A Jamshedpur resident, aware of the facts of the case, said, "This case has been pending for too long. We hope for a quick and fair resolution."
