Electricity Rate Hike SSurprises Consumers

25 paise increase in electricity rates burdens Jamshedpur’s consumers with an additional Rs 4.25 crore monthly.

Jamshedpur’s electricity consumers face financial strain with new rates and summer consumption surge, despite a free electricity scheme for low usage.

JAMSHEDPUR – Jamshedpur and Kolhan’s 8.5 lakh electricity consumers are reeling from a recent 25 paise per unit rate hike, imposing a monthly additional cost of over Rs 4.25 crore.

This adjustment means an extra Rs 50 charge for those consuming around 200 units monthly.

With the arrival of summer, the rate increase is expected to further pressure consumers due to higher electricity usage.

Domestic users are now charged Rs 6.55 per unit, up from Rs 6.30, affecting industrial and rural sectors as well.

While the state government’s introduction of a free electricity scheme for consumption up to 125 units was intended to alleviate some financial burdens, the rate hike has nonetheless caused dismay.

The scheme benefits 2.60 lakh Kolhan consumers but imposes charges for usage beyond 125 units.

Subsidies are provided for usage between 126 to 400 units, yet no relief is offered beyond 401 units, applying the new rate of Rs 6.55 per unit.

This development has sparked concern among residents, who must now navigate these increased costs amid rising consumption demands.
